The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MED VAMC) located in Houston, Texas seeks an energetic and skilled Hematologist/Oncologist at the Multidisciplinary Cancer Center. MED VAMC is a teaching facility and therefore board certification in Hematology/Oncology is required for this opportunity. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Hematology-Oncology. A recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate. At the MED VAMC, we provide a comprehensive range of techniques for cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. We have high expertise in colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, ENT, urologic, and thoracic surgery. Our radiation oncology department is a leader in stereotactic body radiation therapy within the VA system. The Staff Hematologist/Oncologist is responsible for providing comprehensive care in the Cancer Center. Candidates interested in combined hematologic malignancies are particularly encouraged to apply for this opportunity. Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Ability to perform initial histories and physical examinations on outpatients; make assessments and use appropriate diagnostic evaluations; implement timely and appropriate treatment. Rounding with residents and fellows on the inpatient ward. Covers weekend call rotation with other physicians. Participates in tele-medicine services between the main medical center and the various Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Assist with the diagnosis and interpretation of pulmonary nodules. Counsel and advise patients diagnosed with malignancy. Orders diagnostic studies and interprets laboratory tests, EKGs, and radiologic tests. Provides ongoing outpatient care for assigned case load. Prescribes and refills medications within the defined scope of practice. Provides education and counseling of patients and families. Overseeing Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners. Malpractice: Physicians are covered under the Tort Claims Protection Act. Approved Incentives: A recruitment/relocation incentive may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate. Paid Time Off: 8 hours Annual Leave accrued per biweekly pay period; 4 hours Sick leave accrued per biweekly pay period; 10 paid Federal holidays.
